Ms. Susan Mason has been teaching her entire 23 year career at Oneonta. She began teaching right out of college from Jacksonville State University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Language Arts Degree in Secondary Education.

“Somehow, I’ve always known I was going to be a teacher. In fact, I began teaching in the first grade. Well, it was more like tutoring. My teacher had me to help slower readers in class. At the same time, I began a twelve year ritual of grading papers for teachers. Then I would go home and play “school” with my younger brother who was only four. I can honestly say that at age seven, my future as a teacher began materializing. From that point on, I worked hard at being an excellent student believing that it was important to be a good role model for my own students later. My teaching is grounded in several key factors: respect, discipline, flexibility, and growth. I try to develop creativity and confidence in my students, but above all, I encourage my students to perform at higher levels and to have high expectations in their own abilities.”

Her efforts have been recognized, most recently, by being named “OHS Teacher of the Year for 2004-2005.”

Outside the classroom, Ms. Mason loves her summers and enjoys traveling, reading, shopping, and spending time with her family.  She has been known to camp, water ski, bungee jump, parasail, and sky dive.  She lives on a farm with her husband, Richard, and their daughter, Riley Makenzie.
